Frequently Asked Questions
Have you been in a situation where you had to withdraw your child from a tuition centre as he/she was unable to keep up with the speed of the class or struggling to understand what has been taught in class?
While most tuition centres’ place their students with mixed abilities all in the same class, our centre categorises students into 3 different levels – Emergent, Intermediate and Advanced level. This means that your child will be assigned to a class that caters more specifically to his/her learning needs. Before assigning your child to a class, we will conduct a diagnostic assessment to assess which level he/she is currently at. This allows us to better gauge the appropriate learning resources and guidance your child requires at the current standard he/she is in. This way your child will never have to feel like the class is moving at a speed that is too fast for him/her to understand the learning materials taught in class.
Has your child ever mentioned that the questions in assessment books are too difficult and they are clueless on how to solve them?
With most assessment books structured in a way where the questions are sorted by topics, students are often not given enough repetition on each type or concept of questions. Additionally, these books generally lack proper structure in helping students identify question types and concepts. At One Step Journey, our worksheets are structured in a manner where students will be practicing the concepts of questions on repetition so as to master the understanding of mathematical concepts as well as strengthen the skills that they are honing. In addition, we focus heavily on teaching students the different types of strategies in solving problem sums as well as how to identify these questions types and apply the correct method to solve the question. In time, this would boost their confidence with the new skill, allowing them to apply their knowledge and understanding on similar type of questions that they would encounter in future.
Ever felt like your child constantly needs support and guidance when doing assessment books?
When facing challenging questions, students are often reluctant to try as they are afraid to make mistakes. This is due to the fact that they are lacking knowledge on the identification of question types and the approach/steps needed to solve the question. Hence, they rely on others for guidance and is unable to think of problem solving strategies independently. Here at One Step Journey, not only do we explicitly guide our students through the problem-solving strategies, we also encourage our students to step out of their comfort zone and make mistakes as through these valuable learning experiences, they will have a better understanding on how to overcome challenging questions independently when faced with one in exam settings. We are strong advocates that every mistake made becomes a valuable part of the learning process. Students should learn not to fear mistakes, but to value them.
